Glacier Window & Door Inc. is your exclusive source for Loewen in Oregon and SW Washington.
For luxury homeowners – and the architects, designers and custom builders that create their
dreams—Loewen is the brand that delivers an unrivaled combination of performance, artisanship
and environmental sensibility in an extensive line of Douglas Fir, Mahogany and FSC Douglas
Fir windows and doors. For over 100 years the sole use of 100% Coastal Douglas Fir (pseudotsuga menziesii) has been the hallmark
of the Loewen brand. This wood does more than just give Loewen windows a rich, warm texture—
it is naturally tough and resilient, yet still workable.
Loewen crafts windows and doors to last a lifetime. Their frames and sashes are constructed from numerous
smaller pieces laminated together at opposing grains (no visible finger joints.) Not only does this cut
down on wood waste, but it makes for a stronger product. Double mortise and tenon joints ensure sashes
remain square and true, and requires less glue and caulking. Loewen windows are designed to breathe,
and thus help mitigate the effects of moisture working away at the wood and penetrating glass seals.
While Douglas Fir has traditionally been the wood of choice for Loewen, they raise the bar even higher
with optional 100% solid Honduran Mahogany (swietenia macrophylla.) From fine furniture to custom cabinetry,
the natural beauty and strength of Mahogany has made this wood a popular choice for centuries. Also known as
“Big Leaf,” or “Genuine” Mahogany, Honduran Mahogany is known for its natural strength, superior fastener
holding power and resistance to decay. Carefully gathered from certified sources, the fine-grained beauty
of Mahogany fits perfectly with the quality and refinement of Loewen.
In line with their upward reaching nature, Loewen also offers copper and bronze clad exteriors, known as the
Cyprium Collection. Artisan in detail-down to the hand-soldered exterior joints and rich tactile depth of
the thick metal cladding-these hand wrought living surfaces develop distinct patinas that both adapt and define
the individual aesthetics character of the homes to which they belong.
It began at the turn of the twentieth century on the lonely prairies of Southern Manitoba. Here in the village
of Steinbach a group of Mennonite families including the Loewens had migrated from Russia. Among the first
things made by the Loewen millwork were humble items like church pews and bee keeping equipment. But soon,
windows and doors became their specialty.
